Food is one of our biggest bills - and sometimes in the past, when money has been short, we have gone hungry. If we can grow some of our own food, we can have better food and save money.

We have two types of organic gardening - one is the main area next to our houses and the other is to utilise any spare pieces of ground throughout Home & Life for planting trees, like papaya, and bushes including chilli.

In a Thai family, everyone helps with projects to provide for the whole family. At Home & Life, we are a family and we can do the same.

The children who are interested in growing can do most of the work with our adults. They will be learning valuable skills in planning, growing and managing the project.

We have the ground ready and, as we can buy seeds and plants, we will be growing chilli (we need a lot of this!), garlic, lemongrass, Thai basil, tomatoes, Spanish grass, long beans (sometimes known as snake beans), cucumbers, egg plants, pumpkins, papaya and banana.

The first crops are already in. Herbs, for example. In a few months, the first papayas will be ready. We are very hopeful that this will be a good project. It will not cover all our costs but it will help us.

If we have a surplus, we can sell it at the market and there are other things we can develop - we can dry the chilli for our longer use and for sale, and we can make banana chips for ourselves and for sale.
